The state of Colima is on an upward plane, which it raises from sea level until the top
of the Colima’s active volcano,
where the elevation is 12664 feet above de sea level. That gives to Colima’s State
the benefit of having a wide variety
of microclimates. Besides that, an area of Colima land occupies a part of the southern
mountain range and part of the
Mexican volcanic belt and it also has some valleys, rivers, lagoons and mangrove swamps.
As a result of all those factors, Colima’s State harbors a very rich avifauna.
The bird checklist for Colima area counts more than four hundred and fifty different species
of birds, more than 40 of them are endemic to Mexico, as well as several more that are
migratory species, they are used to spending some time in Colima’s area during winter or
summer time.
The country of Mexico has about 1,100 different species of birds, of which 125 species are
endemic, and Mexico also has 43 species of birds called quasi-endemic. The avifauna in Colima is around 476 species, and a little more than 40
of them are endemic, we also have 13 species of the so-called quasi-endemic birds.
